Things to do this month

1. Prune Apple Trees
Apple and Pear trees should be pruned every year to keep their shape and produce better quality fruits

2. Service your Mower
Either do so yourself or take to a local dealer. Ensure your blade is sharpened!

3. Prune Rose Bushes
Whilst roses are dormant it is the ideal time to prune just above a bud and remove deadwood

4. Move dormant Plants
Now is the time to move plants to the new area you would like them to be and divide as required.

5. Fencing
Check all your fencing. This is the ideal time to replace or repair any fence posts and panels. If dry and not too cold, paint wooden structures with preservative

6.  Prune Wisteria
Cut back the summer shoots to 2 or 3 buds

7. Fertiliser
Apply a fertiliser, particularly to hedges and plants

8.  Leaves
Clear leaves from lawn areas and paths

9. Birds
Provide feed and fresh water for local wildlife

10. Vegetables
Plan your crop rotations now in preparation for the new season

January

often the coldest month...

January might be the middle of winter but as the days lengthen the garden starts to grow. Now is a great time to plan for the coming gardening year and to order seeds and plants. Enjoy the fresh air, on dry sunny days, and check your winter protection, stakes, ties and supports are still working after any severe weather. Also put out food for birds and leave some garden areas uncut, a little longer, to provide shelter for wildlife in your garden.
