How and When to Water Your Garden in the Summer Heat

Summer brings longer days, intense sunshine, and soaring temperatures — all of which can take a toll on your garden. Proper watering becomes crucial to keep your plants healthy and thriving. Understanding when and how to water can make a significant difference, both for plant health and water conservation.

When to Water

The best time to water your garden in the summer is early in the morning, ideally between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. At this time, temperatures are cooler, and there’s less wind, which means water can soak into the soil before it evaporates. Morning watering also gives plants time to dry off during the day, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

If morning watering isn’t possible, early evening is the next best option — but try to water before sunset. Watering too late in the evening can leave moisture on leaves overnight, encouraging mildew and rot.

How to Water

Deep, infrequent watering is far more effective than frequent, shallow watering. Shallow watering only moistens the top layer of soil, encouraging roots to grow near the surface where they’re more vulnerable to heat and drought. Instead, aim to water deeply so that moisture reaches at least 6 inches into the soil. This promotes deeper root growth and greater drought resilience.

Use soaker hoses or drip irrigation systems when possible. These deliver water directly to the base of plants, reducing evaporation and keeping foliage dry. For hand watering, aim low — direct water at the roots, not the leaves.

Additional Tips

  • Mulch your garden beds with straw, wood chips, or compost to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Water in the early part of a heatwave, not just when plants begin to wilt.
  • Check soil moisture by inserting your finger or a screwdriver a few inches into the ground. If it’s dry, it’s time to water.

By adjusting your watering habits to suit the summer heat, you can keep your garden vibrant and resilient, even during the hottest months. Thoughtful watering not only conserves water but ensures your plants get exactly what they need to thrive.
